I was trying to help my non English speaking mom, calling ato. I received a call back and it’s a private number.

He said he can check if I’m authorised person or not. He asked my tfn, I didn’t have it handy , then he asked my drivers license number including the card number.

Im so worried now in so many ways like I missed to check if it’s really ato officer? Second, why he needs my drivers license details to check if I’m authorised person for my mom or not? Will name itself isn’t sufficient?

Can someone please help me , if it’s a common practice at ato. Should I call again and check if I was really speaking to ato?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi @Suj,

Yes. This is common practice. We need to identify you first and then confirm that your authorised to access your Mum's tax accounts.

For your peace of mind, contact our individual enquiries team and confirm you spoke to someone from the ATO. There will be a record of every attempt we make to contact you.
