Can you amend individual tax returns that were lodged as returns not necessary and if so how far back can you go?

A "return not necessary" is not a tax return. You can't amend a non-existent tax return.
You would have to go through the process of lodging original returns but think carefully before you proceed because you may be hit with penalties for late lodgement and making a false or misleading statement and on top of that your returns will probably be flagged for audit purposes.
