I contributed more to my super by mistake. The excess will be taxed at the non-concessional rate. I was told that the ATO will give me an option to refund the excess or to keep it in super. What is the process for getting the refund? Do I need to talk to my super fund

You mention in your post that "The excess will be taxed at the non-concessional rate".

This means you have used up even your 5 years carry forward limit.

The ATO has a process called excess concessional contributions (ECC) assessment, where you can request your super fund to release 85% of the excess.

Read more about it here.
