So I have submitted my tax return and it has been processed, yet I realised I have not included the cost of my car so need to make an amendment to include this.

I bought my car this year costing $37,990 and need to claim depreciation. It is used 80% for work use.

I am confused about what values I put in each box and want to make sure the amendment is correct. Do I put the $37,990 in the Total expenses (excluding decline in value) box? If not what exactly goes in there?

And then for the next line where it says decline in value is that the yearly cost or 80% of the yearly cost (depreciation)?

Please give exact answers here as it is important I complete this correctly. I am continually being told to look at the guide on the ATO website but it does not make this part clear.

Also when I submit the amendment is it worth me submitting the invoice for the car along with it and any other documents to speed up the amendment being passed? Please let me know how and what I should include.

Please help!

Hiya @NatalieB

The total expenses will be things like fuel, oil, services etc, costs for running the car but not the cost price of the vehicle.

Now you need to work out the decline in value of the car. You can use the depreciation and capital allowances tool to work out the decline in value. This can either be done through the website or through the tool attached to the work related travel expenses section of your return if you're lodging through ATO online services.

Once you have worked out your decline in value, you will get your calculation total for the deduction.
