Hi, I had my tax return lodged through a tax agent for the 2020–2021 financial year, but he mistakenly did not include a claim for the Medicare levy exemption or reduction, even though I was a temporary resident at the time and should have been exempt. As a result, I paid around $1,600 that I believe I wasn’t required to pay. I only realized this error today while preparing a return for a previous year. I tried to amend the 2020–2021 return, but the amendment period has passed. Is it still possible to lodge an objection, and if so, what steps should I take?
As you "lodged through a tax agent (and) he mistakenly did not include a claim", I'd be starting with him, asking him to cover the cost of submitting the objection, @danekhuumesh .
But if that's not possible or you get push-back (and if so, as an aside, there's a Tax Practicioners' Board), yes, you can lodge an objection. It can be as simple as sending a letter to the ATO which, in effect, notes that the necessary information was not provided to the ATO and, as a result, you believe the ATO's decision was incorrect.
