I lodged my uncomplicated return 31 days ago… I finally managed to get through on the phone and was told that my refund has been finalised and processed however there was a “hold” placed on it preventing it being released….

Unfortunately nobody can seem to tell me why? And have yet been unable to find someone to remove the hold, even after a request was submitted over a week ago to do so!

I have now submitted a complaint in an attempt to resolve this issue and receive my refund…

I was then informed that it will be 30 days before I receive a response from the complaint department, this is utterly ridiculous and unacceptable!!

If it takes this long to respond then perhaps the ATO needs to employ more staff??

Firstly, why hasn’t the ATO kept me updated on the progress of my return and secondly how dare they hold my refund for a ridiculous and unnecessary length of time!

Am I just expected to wait another 4 weeks with no updates or communication from anyone? Does anyone even have a clue what they are doing? On the two separate occasions that I was able to get through by phone I was told two completely different explanations, it’s just not acceptable!!

I will be submitting a further complaint to the ombudsman detailing the inaccuracies and complete disregard of my requests for a resolution.

If we're manually checking your return, it will delay processing. We'll hold returns if we're waiting on further information, if there are any discrepancies or we need to confirm some details, we will contact you.


We can't see your personal tax account on this forum but as you have now lodged a complaint, we can look into this and find out what is holding up the return. Once we have an update, we'll contact you to explain what's going on.
