Sorry in advance for the long winded story.

I tried increasing my tax deduction to 30% per pay, directly with my employer by filling out one of their forms. I made it very clear that I wanted to increase my overall tax deduction to 30% per pay, and not an additional 30% on top of what I already pay towards tax (which is about 20% at the moment). Unfortunately my employer processed this as an additional deduction and I was deducted 50% of my last pay towards tax. So instead of getting $1000, I only received $600. I spoke to my employer and they won't do anything to help me recover those funds. They said "oh you'll just receive it back next tax time". Unfortunately I've had issues the last 2 years with my tax return (due to working 2 casual jobs) and have had tax refunds, instead of returns. I would rather try and recuperate those additional funds that were taxed than risk losing them if I have another tax bill next year. Is there anything I can do or somehow lodge this with the ATO? Those funds are so vital to me, being a low income earner who works 2 casual jobs just to make ends meet.

Hi AshleighDN,

No, we can’t refund extra tax withheld until you lodge your tax return at the end of the financial year. Even though your employer made a mistake.

To fix this going forward, submit a new withholding declaration form to your employer. Clearly state you want a total of 30% withheld, not more.

If you’re worried about your tax situation, check your year-to-date tax withholding on our online services via myGov. This can help you see if you’re on track. Since you are working 2 jobs, keep in mind that you should only claim the tax-free threshold for one of your jobs.
