It has just come to my attention that this matter had not been sorted. So here we are: My late husband passed away in NZ ,in 2015. We received a letter from ATO back in 2019 about his unclaimed super money being transferred to: THE TRUSTEE FOR [removed by moderator]. We have an ABN/Unique Superannuation Identifier (USI) and the amount transferred. We need help on how to access his super?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @nickyk,

We can help you find where the unclaimed super money (USM) was transferred. We’ll need to speak with the legal personal representative (LPR) of the estate. The LPR has the legal authority to manage financial matters and this typically involves obtaining probate or letters of administration.

Alternatively, you could search the ABN/Unique Superannuation Identifier to find the contact details. Once identified, contact the fund directly find out how to claim the money on behalf of the estate.

If your late husband was a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible to transfer the superannuation to a KiwiSaver scheme under the Trans-Tasman Retirement Savings Portability arrangement. This requires:

  • completing the relevant application form
  • providing evidence that the funds belong to your late husband’s estate
  • ensuring the KiwiSaver scheme participates in the portability program.
