Are veterans entitled to any tax relief by way of tax offsets
All replies
There is a non-refundable tax offset - Veterans Superannuation (invalidity pension) tax offset -that was introduced to ensure that veterans and their beneficiaries don't pay more tax because of the Douglas decision. The Douglas decision changed how certain invalidity pensions are treated for tax purposes. So if you receive a lump sum payment that is an invalidity pay ment or pension you may be entitled to this offset.
There is also an invalid or invalid carer tax offset you may be eligible for if you receive an invalidity service pension. Veterans who receive a DVA pension may also qualify for the Seniors & Pensioners Tax Offset.
Hi @Robort47,
Yes, veterans may be entitled to tax relief through specific tax offsets. The veterans' superannuation (invalidity pension) tax offset (VSTO) is available to ensure veterans don't pay more tax because of the Douglas decision.
You don't need to apply for it as we'll automatically work out if you're entitled to a VSTO amount after you lodge your tax return.
Veterans may also be eligible for other tax offsets depending on their circumstances (such as the seniors and pensioners tax offset) if they meet the eligibility requirements.
