I have recently completed and submitted my Tax return via MyGov as I have always done. I noticed that once I entered my partners income my refund was reduced.

We both have Private health Insurance so it shouldn't be the MLS.

I mentioned it at work today and someone else here also noticed this (they also have Private Health Insurance).

I cant understand what made this happen. I was of the understanding that their income does not affect mine.

Does anyone have any idea why?

Thanks :-)

You may find it is the Medicare levy that has changed. Mytax will know you have a spouse when you start your tax return so until you enter spouse income details it will calculate any refund as your spouse having zero income. If your taxable income is less than $57,383 and spouse income is zero then you receive a Medicare levy reduction. Once you enter spouse income then this reduction will disappear and you will pay the full 2% Medicare levy.

Thanks Taxduck, but it is not this. We are both over that income and I had estimated his to get an estimate of my refund/debt and when I put his actual income in $2k more it changed my estimated refund by approx $200
