Hello,

I’ve declared myself as a non-resident for Australian tax purposes. I’d like to open a Wise account to make loan repayments on my Australian home loan. However, Wise isn’t supported in the country where I currently live.

Due to high conversion fees, I’m considering asking my employer to pay my salary directly into a Wise account so I can transfer funds straight to my Australian loan. Wise requires proof of address, and since my current location isn’t supported, I’m wondering if I can use my Australian home address instead.

Wise support team advised that I don’t need to live at that address — they just need a utility bill as proof. However, I’m concerned that providing an Australian address might affect my tax residency status or raise questions with the ATO in the future.

Could someone please advise whether using my Australian address for my Wise account could cause any tax or residency issues later on?

Thank you for your help.

Hi @LSU,

Using your Australian address for your Wise account won't change your tax residency status. Your residency for tax purposes depends on much more than just an address on a financial account.

Tax residency is based on factors like your physical location, family ties, assets, and business or employment situation - not where your bank accounts are registered.
