Hi there,I have a tax debt that is due in March 2026, I have the following questions:

If I pay this in two installments this November and December 2025,

  1. will I accrue any GIC on it?
  2. Do I have to set up a payment plan for this or I can just login to my ATO account online pay the half now and repeat the same process for the other half in December 2025.

Hi,

if the payment due date is in March 2026 - there is no GIC unless it remains unpaid after that date.

You do not need a payment plan and can pay any amount earlier if you want.

Hi @Peedee - Just adding to what @MPrivate said.

General Interest Charge (GIC) only starts accruing from the day after the due date on any unpaid balance.

If you pay the full amount before the due date in March 2026, you won’t incur any GIC. You can make multiple payments through ATO Online Services or myGov without setting up a payment plan.

If you think you won’t be able to pay the full amount by the due date, you can request a payment plan closer to the time. You can do this online or by calling our Lodge and Pay team.
