Can I then decide to go back to work after officially retiring, and having claimed my superannuation as a lump sum?

After you turn 60, @Dharmagirl , and meet a condition of release (retiring from a job) you can certainly withdraw your super. But until you're 65, the expectation is that you've made the decision to retire from full time employment. If you're plans are uncertain, or if you're sure that's not the case, the more-legitimate approach would be to commence a transition to retirement income stream which will allow you to access up to ten per cent of your balance until the restrictions vanish at age 65.

Here's an example with great ATO guidance, albeit from few years ago, which states "when you first retire your intention to never be gainfully employed again must be genuine". And note that the decision rests with your super fund, i.e. you probably need to convince them, not the ATO per se!
