Will is exempt from the Medicare levy as he is in Defence and all of his medical care is taken care of by Defence - he is not covered by spouse's private health insurance.

The Spouse Chiara is not Medicare levy exempt which is why have the private health insurance.

Chiara's private health insurance commenced in December 2024 because prior to that they were posted in Europe for 3 years where all of their medical care was taken care of by the Department of Defence so their private health insurance was out on hold during the time and reactivated when they returned in December 2024.

For their 2025 tax returns, how to answer M1 & M2 questions? especially for M2 Medicare levy surcharge: 1. Taxpayer and dependants had private hospital insurance for the full year? & 2. number of days not liable for the surcharge.

Hi,

I'm ex ADF, I've been having some issues with ML and MLS post discharge....and I've realised MLS isn't written about clearly enough for ADF pers, so I feel your pain.

I don't have an answer for your question specifically.....

However I would suggest primarily that your husband contacts DEFPAC in Melbourne and asks to speak to the overseas administration team. They should have been administering him the entire time he was overseas and they almost certainly would have encountered this question before. If he has no idea what DEFPAC is he can call 1800 DEFENCE and ask to be put through to overseas admin team at DEFPAC.

Failing that I would suggest that your husband contacts whoever was posted to the position prior to him and asks them what they did.
