I've attempted to resolve this issue with phone calls and now a secure email from my tax agent practice portal however currently I have no solution. My registered BAS agent number login to the portal is linked to an old Family Trust that I used to practice under. I've been told verbally by various specialists in the tax department this is due to issues dating back to 2010 and a soft wear update between the ATO and the Tax Practitioners Board and to simple remove the Trust link (which has now been vested) is problematic. I've had no response to the email that I've sent via the tax agent portal asking for a whole of practice transfer.


I need to cancel the ABN of the family trust as it's been vested but if I do this I might not be able to login online to the tax agent portal and access my clients and be able to continue to make lodgements etc


Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Since you've already sent a secure email through the tax agent portal requesting the whole-of-practice transfer but haven't received a response, you'll need to follow up directly with us. The transfer process will move your client list and practice details to your new entity while maintaining your access to the tax agent portal.


For practice restructuring situations like yours, we can handle transfers when:

  • a practice now operates under a trust
  • an existing entity structure changes
  • a sole practitioner becomes a company or partnership
  • partnerships merge or change partners.

We cannot perform partial client base transfers - it must be your whole practice. Once the transfer is complete, you'll be able to cancel the ABN for your vested family trust without losing access to your tax agent portal or client list.


Contact us directly on the Tax Practitioner Assistance Service to follow up on your whole-of-practice transfer request and ensure the linking issue from 2010 is resolved. This will allow you to maintain your portal access while properly closing your vested family trust's ABN.
