My deceased grandma left me some money in her will in India. The money is now to be distributed to me. Do I need to show any evidence to the ATO to prove it is inherited money? If so, what do they require?

Or can it simply be deposited into my account?

Hi @Prach,

You don’t need to declare inherited money and in most cases you don’t need to provide evidence to us when you receive an inheritance.

You can have the funds deposited into your account. If that money goes on to produce income, such as bank interest, you'll include that income in your tax return.

If we ask for evidence, keep written proof showing it’s an inheritance, such as a copy of the will or a letter from the executor stating the amount was paid to you as a bequest. If the payment comes from a foreign trust, different rules may apply.
