Hello Community,

I am no longer living in Australia and I am planning to collect my superannuation.

My bank account may be closed before the superannuation is paid, as the processing may take some time.

If my bank account is closed at that time, will the funds be returned to the sender(ato)?

Also, can my superannuation be paid into my friend’s Australian bank account on my behalf, if they have a valid account?

Thank you in advance.

Hi @Cee789 ,

If you are no longer living in Australia and are applying for a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP), this is how it works:

If your bank account is closed

If the bank account you nominated is closed or invalid at the time the payment is processed, the payment will fail and be returned to the super fund. The money is not lost, but it will delay your payment until you provide new, valid bank details.

Paying super into a friend’s bank account

No - your superannuation cannot be paid into your friend’s bank account, even if they have a valid Australian account. For security and anti-money-laundering reasons, super can only be paid:

  • into a bank account in your own name, or
  • in some cases, by cheque made payable to you (this depends on the super fund).

What you should do

  • Keep your Australian bank account open until the payment is received, or
  • Check with your super fund whether they allow payment to an overseas bank account in your own name.
