installing solar panels in rented property
All replies
I'm sorry for the above mistake.
I have rental property in WA, I live in Sydney. There will be solar system installed in the property. The installers require me to be at the property during install. It relates to possible changes of install and approval of costs during install and payment of the outstanding amount.
I know that costs of travel to rental property is not tax deductible but this is special case where my presence is necessary.
Can I claim the cost of travel in this case?
If the property is residential (ie not commercial or industrial), there is no tax deduction for travel.
Thank you. I thought so.
Hi @tenfour,
You're right, travel to a residential rental property isn't deductible.
You can’t claim any travel expenses relating to inspecting, maintaining or collecting rent for a residential rental property. This includes car, airfares, accommodation and meals. There aren't any exceptions regardless of the purpose or whether you have to be there in person.
Unless you're carrying on a business of property investing, these costs aren't allowed for individuals who own residential rental properties.
