I am trying to apply for an ABN.

Firstly, I am confused as to where, if anywhere, to enter the name of my business. I can see in step 3 the first question asks for the legal name of the individual/sole trader. Clicking on the ? icon the information there states "These fields refer to the legal name of the business or organisation that is used in all official documents." Does this mean my name is the legal name of the business?

Second, if I don't have a physical shop or store, does that mean my home address is the business address?

Hi @Seraph

For your first question, yes – your personal name is the legal name of your business when you're operating as a sole trader. When you complete step 3 of the ABN application, you'll enter your full legal name (as it appears on official documents like your driver's licence or passport) in the field asking for the legal name of the individual or sole trader. This is correct because as a sole trader, you and your business are legally the same entity.

For your second question, yes – if you don't have a separate business premises like a shop or store, your home address is your business address. You'll need to provide your physical home address as the business address on your ABN application. It's your responsibility to update your ABN details within 28 days if your business address changes in the future.

You can apply for your ABN online for free through the Australian Business Register. The application is straightforward and if successful, you'll receive your 11-digit ABN immediately. Make sure you have your TFN and identity documents ready when you apply.
