hi everyone, i recently opened a redbubble/print on demand store online and i've been making some sales here and there. I registered for an ABN and have linked it to my account and I've done everything by the book, however i am unsure what to do come tax time regarding paying tax on this income.

In the invoices and quarterly reports from redbubble it seems that tax is being paid on every sale i make: each sale is given a reference code, and the invoice includes another line for each reference code which says "Excess Markup Fee for Bill #reference code *includes tax" this additional line in the invoice shows a small fee deduction based on the value of the sale its linked to. for example, on a sale where i made $1.14, there is a deduction of $0.19 shown on the invoice, and it says *includes tax.

here's my question! does that mean redbubble are already taking the tax on this income? or do i need to pay additional tax on this income at tax time? Unfortunately i'm not very good with this stuff and can't seem to find a clear answer on this. any help would be appreciated

also, are there any deductions i should be making regarding this income? i create all the artwork digitally and use a print on demand business so i don't have any printing costs.

thanks in advance

Hi @db9000,

No, Redbubble isn't paying your income tax on these earnings. The fee deduction you're seeing with '*includes tax' is likely referring to Goods and Services Tax (GST) that Redbubble handles as part of their business operations, not your personal income tax obligation.

You'll need to declare all income from your Redbubble sales in your tax return as business income. This income gets added to any other income you earn, and you'll pay tax on the total based on your tax bracket. If you're making money outside of your salary or wage, it's important to budget for your income tax obligations to avoid a large tax bill when you lodge your tax return.

For deductions, you can claim expenses that relate to earning your Redbubble income. Even though you don't have printing costs, you may be able to claim things like:

  • software subscriptions or apps you use to create your designs
  • computer equipment or a portion of your internet costs
  • any fees Redbubble charges you
  • advertising or promotion costs.

You'll need to keep complete and accurate business records and make sure you update them regularly. The expenses must directly relate to earning your business income to be deductible.

Since you've registered for an ABN, you should check whether you need to register for GST. You must register for GST if your annual turnover is $75,000 or more. You can use our income tax estimator to work out if you're likely to owe tax this income year and consider making prepayments throughout the year to manage your tax obligations.
