My previous employer hasn't made a super payment to me since March 2025. I resigned in December 2025. I thought when inputting data through Xero, it shows what Super is owing. Failing that, I thought the ATO could see what an employee has earned and could see if a super payment had been missed. I don't really know why I thought that, perhaps because it's all become so automated. Anyway, my super hasn't been paid and two of the quarters are technically late. If I hadn't noticed, would the employer have got away with never paying? Or would it have caught up with them eventually? I've put in a referral to the ATO to check, but has anyone been on the other side of this (where they were supposed to pay and genuinely just missed payments) and can tell me how it happens? I've done payslips before in Xero and it shows up when super is owed etc, so I can't see where it would go wrong and the payment is missed, but it has, so I'm curious. Everyone else was paid their super, and the company has plenty of funds, if that makes a difference. Thank you.

Are you sure that your super was not paid into another fund in your name.

You should ask the previous employer before complaining to ATO.

Hi @SnowyStar25,

We don't automatically detect missed super payments in real-time. While we receive data from employers and super funds, employees often identify unpaid super first by checking their accounts. You were right to notice and report it.

We review every notification of unpaid super from employees. Using Single Touch Payroll and super fund data, combined with referrals, we identify non-compliance and take action, though it’s not always immediate.

Employers who miss due dates must lodge a super guarantee charge statement and pay interest and fees. Payroll systems like Xero show liabilities, but employers must still process payments by due dates.

If you've reported the unpaid super contributions already, we’ll review your case and work to recover any unpaid amounts.
