Dear Sir/Madam,

I previously lived in Australia, but I am currently residing in South Korea.

It appears that my bank account has been closed and that my remaining balance may have been transferred to the Australian Government as unclaimed money.

Could you please advise which department I should contact regarding this matter, or provide the appropriate email address for inquiries related to unclaimed money?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi @Jerokong,

We hold unclaimed superannuation money, but unclaimed bank account balances are typically handled by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), not the ATO.

If your unclaimed money relates to superannuation (super) that was transferred to us, you can check and claim it through ATO online services. You'll need to access your myGov account linked to the ATO to see if we hold any super in your name. If you're a former temporary resident who has left Australia and your visa has expired, you may also be eligible to claim a Departing Australia superannuation payment.

For unclaimed bank account money specifically, you'll need to contact ASIC directly. They maintain records of unclaimed money from bank accounts, shares, investments, and life insurance policies. You can search for and claim this money through ASIC's MoneySmart website.
