Hi My client's 2021 tax return was lodged on the 4th October. On the portal it now shows as: Cancellation of Tax return Individuals - Income Tax for the period from 01 Jul 20 to 30 Jun 21. There has been no communication about it. They have a small amount to be refunded. I am unsure what I do from here.

There are a number of reasons the tax return may be showing as cancelled, such as:

  • the client's TFN is compromised, so we need to take extra steps to confirm it's actually the client
  • there is already an original tax return for that time, so we can't process another original
  • the client's record is in lockdown, which we do if a client leaves the country and doesn't notify us they've returned
  • an amendment was lodged before the original tax return was.

However, there may be other reasons, too. Unfortunately, to check the details more, you'll need to contact us to look into their account.
