My shares were consolidated and change its name in 2013 hence the number reduced from 34800 to 4970. the original purchase was $0.33/shares. Now, it is $0.54/share . Do I have to pay CGT on the 4970 shares if I sell it now? The share has the new name/ code now.

4970 shares now have same total cost base as original 34800 shares.

Consolidation is not a CGT disposal.

Hi @Phlanb5361,

If you sell or dispose of your shares, you'll need to determine your capital gain or loss and report this on your return. You'd still use market value of the shares at the time of acquisition of the original shares when working out your cost base. You then deduct the cost base away from the sale price. The difference will be your capital gain or loss.

It wasn't my question, @Jodie_ATO, but I do have a few similar bundles, and I'm not following your answer. I can't see why the market value at consolidation is relevant and I'd love to know - always willing to have my view of reality adjusted!)

And @Phlanb5361, I'd been assuming it went something like this:

> cost base on 34,800 at 33c = $11,484

> current price on 4,970 at 54c = $2,683

i.e. if they're sold now, isn't that a rather sad capital loss?

(adjusted for, if any, a capital return that wasn't mentioned)

Hi @knaresbro,

We appreciate your feedback. We've updated our previous post to correct the infomation. When consolidation takes place the acquisition date is still looked at as the purchase date of the original shares.

In relation to our original poster, they advised consolidation took place in 2013, and their ownership of their original shares would've been prior to consolidation. Given fluctuations over the last decade, they may end up with a capital loss. We can't comment on the movement of the stock market or gains and losses occurring.
