Recently my MyGov account was fraudulently accessed by someone guessing the answer to one of my secret questions. They then used my ATO account to submit a tax return using their own bank details. When I called the ATO to ask them to withdraw the tax return that had been submitted, they placed a lock on my account. As such, I can no longer access my ATO account online to submit my actual tax return. Whenever I try, I get the error message A951.22 - Unable to verify your identity.

I was told that I had to call the Client Identity Support Centre on 1800 467 033 to get them to unlock my account for 48 hours. However, I've now discovered that this number is only manned from 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday NSW time. So I can't call them on a Saturday to be able to submit my tax return over the weekend (which is when I have time to submit it). Further, I'm not in the same timezone as NSW, so can't even call them after work on a Friday.

I have since changed from secret questions to two-factor authentication using my mobile phone and also changed my password. So there shouldn't be any risk of someone accessing my account again. As such, how can I permanently remove the lock on my account? My account is now secure and I need to be able to access it whenever I want, including on weekends.

Hi @emziee,

Your understanding is correct. If there is a restriction on your account. The only way to have it lifted is calling our Client Identity Support Centre.

Yes, that would be tricky if you're not in the same time zone being AEST. We understand that the process may be frustrating, but it is in place to protect your information.

You can though discuss with our Client Identity Support Centre what your options are. If a permanent removal is possible.
