I work as a software developer. Some key information below.

  • I am supplied a work laptop
  • I want to buy a laptop for both personal use and self-study for work
    • The self-study is for a language specifically to be introduced at my work place
      • e.g. learning java, to work on java at work
  • The self-study is self-paced videos and projects
  • I plan to calculate time i spent on learning java and personal use to get a percentage for tax deduction

Am i able to claim a deduction on this laptop?

Hi @SpiroMan22,

If you meet the eligibility to claim self-education expenses, then yes you'd be able to claim the laptop as a deduction.

You're right, you'll need to calculate the time between the self-education course vs personal use as you can only claim a tax deduction for the self-education portion.
