So l am finishing my working holiday gap year in Australia in a few weeks. When I arrived in Melbourne I started working in hospitality and got taxed roughly 30% for the first 2 months because my employer thought I was a foreign resident. As we fixed this after two months I was taxed the usual 15% for working holiday makers starting from that point. But now I have payed roughly 1.5k more taxes then I should have.

Where can I declare my taxes/ get a refund?

Is this easy or will this matter absolutely drain me? I am from Germany btw.

Looks like I won't be in Australia when the official tax year ends. I'll be leaving in may as of now. Thanks!!!

Hallo @Berek,

Yep, you'll claim back any overpaid taxes in your Australian tax return. If your main source of income is from your employment, then this shouldn't be too taxing for you (pun intended).

If you have access to our online services, you can do this from back in Germany after the financial year ends. Just make sure to update your myGov sign in options before you go.

Alternatively, you may be able to lodge an early tax return before you - however these are via paper only.

Also, just in case you're not aware, you may be able to claim your super. Check out our article Claiming your departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP) online for more info about that.

Safe travels! ✈

Hey RileyATO, thanks for your reply. I honestly wasn’t expecting to get a decent answer. In order to do my tax returns from Germany I should link my MyGov account to my ATO account, correct? So I am not able to do so as I can’t link 2 of the obligated identity proofs. Therefore I should contact the ATO, right? But I al always in line for an hour there… could you recommend what to do? Is there anything else I’d need for getting my taxes back before I leave Australia? I read that I should have an australian bank account for a smooth transfer, anything besides?

Thanks for the super advice as well.

cheers!
