Hi all, I'm a bit confused reading all the super spouse contributions content. I want to check my understanding about how you can make super contributions for your spouse. Do these 2 options sound about right?

Assuming all the eligibility criteria are met:

  1. The (assumed) higher earning spouse can ask their super fund to split their concessional contributions with their spouse super fund
    1. They can add voluntary concessional payments to their super fund via their employer contributions
      1. But only up to their individual limit? They can't contribute voluntarily up the combined maximum voluntary amount for the spouse, because the spouse received contributions are considered non concessional
      2. The concessional cap can be carried forward (if eligibility criteria are met?)
    2. Does this just occur as each contribution is received throughout the year? Might depend on super fund?

2. OR they can claim a tax offset up to a max of $540 for paying contributions directly, not through contribution splitting?

I've been reading these, but finding it hard to put all together! Many thanks in advance :)

I'm planning to talk to an accountant about our specific circumstances, but I'm keen to understand this in general terms :)

  1. That is splitting, not spouse contribution, and does not work as you have described - can only be done after end of financial year.
  2. Yes

Advice about whether you should make contributions can only be provided by a licensed (AFSL) adviser.

Ah I see so there's actually 3 options, splitting, spouse contribution and tax offsets. Thanks for the info. Sounds like I better get a licensed advisor!
