Should the cost of upgrading my laptop be classed as a cost of managing tax affairs if my current laptop is unable to access ATO Online Services?

I have just tried to access my ATO account however I am unable to as my browser is no longer supported/doesn't meet the minimum requirement. I have no desire to upgrade my laptop as it meets all my current needs and is very rarely used.

I will obviously need to lodge my tax return as well as assist my husband with lodging his tax return and his BAS's.

Just wondering how the ATO suggests I complete my obligations when I can no longer access this myself.

The way I see it is I'm going to have to purchase a new laptop purely for the reason of completing our taxation obligations or pay a tax agent to complete for us which of course that expense will be tax deductible.

I have recently left my job as an accountant so more than capable of completing myself and cannot justify the price of paying someone else.

A basic return at my old firm will cost $290 each however there would then be additional costs for 3 rental properties plus 4 BAS's each year at a minimum of $220 each.

Hi @RSE,

You can’t claim the cost of a new laptop under managing your tax affairs.

If you choose to have an accountant / tax agent lodge on your behalf, then yes you can claim this under the cost of managing your tax affairs.

If you choose to buy a new laptop, you may be able to claim it as a work-related expense if your husband is running a business.
