If a disability support carer has clients regularly staying at their house (most weekends) and needs to do renovations to bathroom etc for clients access, is any of the cost of this claimable on the tax return?

Hey @Kelly005,

Are you an employee or is this your own business (sole trader)?

Employees can typically claim home office and running expenses if they work from home, for example computers, phone and internet use, etc that you're required to use for work. But they can't claim home renovation costs as a deduction.

It's a different story for sole traders who run their business from home though. If renovations and home improvements are made for income-producing activities, they might be treated as capital works (which are deductible over a period of time). However, capital gains tax (CGT) implications may also apply when the home is sold.

We've created a tax guide for support workers that might give an idea of what else you can claim 😃
