I am currently staying on a working holiday visa, but will be returning to home country next month as my visa expires.

However, I still need to log in ATO because I have to apply for tax return and superannuation for this term after I return to Japan.

So I would like to know if there are any applications or settings I should do now in order to operate my Gov account through online.

I am actually most concerned about my phone number, as I am always asked to enter my SMS verification when log in.

I currently have an Australian phone number, but plan to cancel this number before leaving. However, I currently do not have a new phone number and cannot register it instead.

So I fear that I will not be able to verify my identity and will not be able to continue using my account.

Hi @Rodisb

It's great that you asked this before you've left the country! This way you can get everything set up now because it's hard to do once you've left.

So, since you won't have an Australian number to receive the SMS, you'll need to download the myGov code generator app.

After you've done this, go into your myGov account settings, click on sign in settings, and change this to myGov code generator app. So now that that's done, once your home the app will generate a code for you to log into myGov with, instead of a SMS to an Australian number.

For more info see our article on accessing myGov and ATO after leaving Australia.

It's worth noting that the help pages on the Tax lodgement form all point to geoblocked pages, so you will need to use the ATO Live Chat Support to get information

You can update your contact details, including your phone number, in your myGov account before leaving Australia. Alternatively, you may want to keep your Australian number active until you can update it with a new number to ensure continued access.
