My husband’s ATO account has been hacked and they have been changing his previous tax returns to benefit them. They have also changed his bank details on his ATO account so any fraudulent moneys gained will go to that account. We can’t report anything because it’s the weekend. My question is does he change his bank details back to his own right now? Does he leave it and let the Identity Theft team deal with it? We noticed that they are making it seem like we had rental properties and that is creating more of a return or something. It is also making my husbands HECS go off the charts. He had almost paid it out with less than $1500 left to pay and now it is saying $9500 left to pay.

Does anyone have any advice on what we can do on the weekend? Hubby is talking to the police now but besides that we don’t know what else to do.

Hi @AmandaMoo87

It's great that you got on top of this straight away!

Innerwesty has given some good points on what to do now. But, we want to provide some other important info as well.

If you suspect you've been hacked, you'll have to give our Client Identity Support Centre a call so they can put some protective measures on your account. They'll be able to walk you through the process and get everything updated to ensure your account is secure.

My husband had fraudulent credit card transactions earlier this year and it was very upsetting to deal with. Not the same as your situation I know. But I’d suggest thinking about what else might be compromised, there are probably some things you can do like changing passwords and adding multifactor authentication. I made a list of accounts and we updated them just in case. About the tax stuff, returns/refunds don’t get processed instantly so it’s good you’ve noticed now. contact the ATO first thing tomorrow they have a specific phone number for identity theft and some tips about cyber security on their website.
