Hi All,

I'm using my own MacOS device for work from home and need to use some software for my work-related tasks.

Those are Parallels (Windows emulator) to use Windows software and an Microsoft NTFS for Mac to work with external drives.

As far as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) none of the apps I mentioned fall into the categories listed on ATO website.

You can claim the cost of associated computer software or programs that you use for work, such as:

  • physical CDs or apps you buy for your device
  • subscriptions
  • anti-virus and anti-spyware software
  • virtual private networks (VPN).

However, I need them for my work (it will be 0% of personal use).

Can I still claim them on tax return?

Hi @Tax_Newbie_24,

It's not the be all and end all of things. People can claim a deduction for Windows 365 subscriptions, which sounds similar to your Parallels subscription.

The word subscription 'is' on that list you provided. Software and subscriptions change and update often, so we couldn't include a detailed list of everything each year. As long as you require something for work and use it for work purposes, it's generally deductible. 🖥
