I recently moved back to the UK after living in Australia and need to file my tax return. However, I can’t log into my MyGov account as I no longer have my Australian mobile number. I have tried using the MyGov ID app as a means of alternative 2 factor authentication, however, when I have attempted this I am met with a notification to say my digital ID does not meet the requirements for MyGov. I also do not have the relevant documents required to strengthen my digital ID as my Medicare application is still yet to be processed.

Could someone advise on how I could update my contact details and access my account from overseas? Without my Australian phone number. Any guidance on filing my return from abroad would also be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi @Tomlindley1

Oh no! We've got the steps you'll need take.

You'll need to create a new myGov account and relink.

Hi @Deb_ATO ,

I have created a new myGov account and tried to relink to the ATO. However, the only options for me to do so are via phone number or through myGov ID.

My myGov ID app was recently updated on my phone and as a result it has lost my account details. I had verified my temporary Australian working holiday visa and my Australian drivers license on myGov ID as these were the only documents I had at the time of making the account. I have since logged into that same account and now there’s no record of my verified identification documents, and my account is at Basic strength. I still have my Australian drivers license, but as my VISA has expired, so this can no longer be used to verify my ID. I believe I need 2 documents of ID for my account to reach enough strength for it to be linked to the ATO, so I am stuck.

What can I do to link my ATO to myGov account to process a tax refund application?

Thank you.
