I lived overseas (US) for the last 25years and did not know I was supposed to be filing taxes. I had an old HECS debt that I did not know I was supposed to be making payments on - when I realized it still existed I paid it off in full back in 2023. I spoke with the ATO a few times when setting the HECS debt and they never said anything about the missing taxes. I became a tax resident again in Dec 2024. I have now logged into ATO and I have 25years of overdue taxes. what do I do from here? how much is this going to cost me?

Hi @csinglet,

To reassure you, you’re not the first in this situation. I'd recommend contacting a tax agent to help get everything sorted.

Extra info though:

You can check your tax residency and since you were overseas for 25 years, you may not be required to lodge a return for some/all those years (e.g. no Australian income, non-resident). If that’s the case, you may only need to submit a non-lodgment advice instead of a full return.

There may be failure-to-lodge penalties or interest applied if you owed tax in any of those years. You can request remission of penalties and explain your situation. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis.
