I paid one payg instalment at the end of this year just before submitting my tax return. I have submitted my tax return but it does not display the payg instalment on the notice of assessment - is this correct?

I was set up with PayG but knew my tax payable would not be as high in this FY so reduced the instalment amount. Including the PayG instalment I did pay I think I will still have a small amount owing. But this seems not to have been factored into the notice of assessment, so it is saying I owe the full amount. Not sure what to do as there’s no way to contact ATO and I just want to know what has happened and if it needs correcting. I don’t want to have to pay it twice.

Hi @Givewaygiveway,

When you lodge your tax return, any PAYG instalments you’ve paid during the year should automatically be credited against your tax payable. If the instalment isn’t showing, it could be due to a few reasons:

  • The payment might not have been processed yet or wasn’t linked correctly to your account.
  • You may have paid it after the ATO processed your return.
  • The instalment may have been paid under a different account (for example, if you have a business or trust and paid under that ABN).

You can check your PAYG instalment activity by logging into myGov and going to your ATO account.

Under ‘Tax’, select ‘Activity statements’ and then ‘Instalments’. This will show what’s been paid and how it’s been applied.

If the instalment was paid and hasn’t been credited, you won’t need to pay it again, but you may need to contact us so we can investigate it.

Thank you for your reply!

I do believe I need to speak with the ATO about this but I have not been able to get through on the phone.

I go through the full process and select the appropriate options and then it tells me it can’t take my call and disconnects me.

I can see the activity statement however it looks like it hasn’t been finalised even though I have paid it and I have evidence in my bank statements. It is still showing the option to pay or revise. If I click through to finalise and pay it glitches.

I did pay prior to lodging my tax return but only very shortly prior.

I only have one account.

Any further help you can provide would be greatly appreciate, or if you can advise how I can actually get into contact with someone to help directly with my matter that would be amazing!
