There's no official minimum balance requirement to start an SMSF. However, you need to consider the ongoing costs to determine if it's cost-effective for your situation.


Every year you'll need to pay for an independent audit, supervisory levy, and potentially tax agent fees, valuations, and legal costs. These costs can add up regardless of your balance size. A financial advisor or registered tax agent that specialises in this area can help.
