I recently lodged my tax return whilst having an outstanding PAYG instalment debt. I was entitled to a tax refund from my return; however, part of that refund was automatically used to pay off the outstanding debt.

It appears that my tax assessment did not credit the PAYG instalment amount automatically paid, meaning I have effectively overpaid my tax.

Could you please advise how I can claim back the amount used to automatically used to settle this debt, given it was not credited in my return?

Hi @vincent.18,

When you lodge your tax return, any PAYG instalments you've paid should automatically be credited against your income tax liability. If you had an outstanding PAYG instalment debt, it's possible that your tax refund was used to offset this balance.

However, if you believe your PAYG instalments haven't been properly credited to your income tax account, have a look at this post we answered recently. It will help with next steps.
