I recently completed my tax return for last year. I had a sizeable tax bill that I paid immediately (on 31 Oct). I was just prompted via text from the ATO that I needed to start paying PAYG instalments.

I logged in, and it still says that I owe the money that I have paid.

I sent the money via BPAY and included the reference code.

I initially looked into what instalments would look like, but then decided to pay the bill in full to avoid any interest on top of it.

I don't want to spend hours on hold with the ATO.

How to I prove I paid this bill?

Hi @EJHAN

It sounds like you have paid your income tax bill. The amount you still have outstanding is Pay As You Go Instalments (PAYGI). These are a prepayment towards your predicted tax liability next year.

You are automatically entered into the PAYGI when you meet the following criteria:

  • instalment income from your latest tax return of $4,000 or more
  • tax payable on your latest notice of assessment of $1,000 or more
  • estimated (notional) tax of $500 or more.

We have a fantastic article containing some of the FAQ on PAYGI.
