This is a tricky one. I am both a UK & AU citizen. I left Aus in 2012 & returning for work for the first time in a few weeks.

My employer has asked me to contact the ATO to check/activate my TFN, BUT, I can't get in touch with them as i can't increase my ID strength on myID/My.Gov as:

  • My passport is more than 3 years out of date (won't accept it as ID)
  • Don't have a driving liscense
  • I DO have my citizenship certificate

How do I get hold of anyone at the ATO, is my only option calling them? How can I prove who I am to them on the phone if I don't have the required ID strength to get any answers?

Hi @Meg.Banshee,

Your TFN likely became inactive when you left Australia (this is regardless of your visa status). Since you've been away for 13 years, your TFN will need to be reactivated now that you're returning to work in Australia.

If you can't increase your identity strength online due to your expired passport, calling our individual team is your best option. You'll need to confirm your identity over the phone, and we can work with the documents you have available, including your citizenship certificate.

Another option is using a registered tax agent to act on your behalf.
